AI – A cautionary tale

I am a fan of AI – don’t get me wrong. But i’ve been increasingly concerned with the hype and explosion in the use (or desire to use) AI across the world yet we know it is still in its infancy and poorly governed. I said at a conference last year that I hoped it wouldn’t take lose of life or a business going bankrupt to drive change. Sadly the former has already happened with 2 known suicides related to emotional connections with AI chatbots (as written in this article by Henry Fraser). AI governance and ethics couldn’t be more important right now to help prevent these tragedies. The AI age is already here and is already permeating everyday devices and software and demand is only going to continue to increase. As information and data professionals it is our duty to hold ourselves, our organizations, service providers and suppliers to account to ensure everyone benefits safely from its use.
