The use of machine learning in image comparison is not new; just look at any modern airport or retailer using facial recognition. UVeye has built a new solution for scanning for paint and panel damage in cars. The solution not only detects before and after damage but can generate a detailed report of its findings. This type of solution is of interest particularly to motor vehicle insurers as it could be used to accurately determine damage caused in accidents.

Recently, a Hertz rental car outlet implemented the technology with mixed results; some customers found it to be very helpful in proving specific damage wasn’t caused by them, while others said they had been reported for damage that was already there.
